Mrs Lindy Illingworth  - Chair of Governors and Foundation Governor
It is with great pleasure that I have been one of the two Foundation Governors on the Governing Body of Long Marston for the past four years. I represent our Vicar, Rev. Martin Otter. My career was in education, specialising in early years, teaching children and students in nurseries, schools and in further and higher education. I have children and grandchildren in the south of England and New Zealand. As a retiree I have the time to devote to the role of Chair of Governors, which I took on in 2018. I am delighted to be working with our senior management team, led by Mrs Flatters, and supporting them in providing high quality personalised learning and development opportunities for all our pupils.

Mrs Geraldine Barker - Foundation Governor
My role as Foundation Governor is to ensure the Christian character of the school is secured, preserved and developed as well as supporting the school to be effective in achieving and exceeding.  My background is working in Education and Training for over 39 years, working across a range of ages and abilities in schools, colleges, staff training environments and various Government agencies.  I am (sort of!) retired but work a few hours a week in the Parish Office in Rufforth.  It is my pleasure to be able to contribute to Long Marston school.

Mrs Jacki Burrow - Parent Governor
I am a mother of two with all the challenges and excitement that motherhood brings and my career is in Software. As a woman I am passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and the Creative Arts, and as a mother that passion is further boosted. We chose Long Marston Primary School due to the wonderful confidence and self-esteem that the pupils demonstrate. The staff truly care about each and every pupil as an individual and I am keen to support the school to continue this exceptional quality. I am proud to be a Parent Governor for such a special and wonderful school.

Mrs Liz Mellor - Executive Headteacher

Mrs Lena Henderson - Co-opted Governor
My professional life has been revolved around education and included roles, like a teacher of English as a Foreign language, children yoga instructor and my current role - mindfulness teacher. I have also worked on a number of projects in various universities in Yorkshire. One of my key professional interests is the innovation in education and how learning technology can improve learning and teaching. I feel privileged to be involved as a governor at Long Marston school and contribute to the work of the curriculum committee in enhancing pupils’ learning experiences and their environment.

Mrs Deana Massey - Parent Governor
As a recent graduate in Contemporary Craft, I am now working towards forming professional partnerships with schools to support their Arts teaching within the curriculum alongside building my own creative practice. Creativity and problem solving are at the heart of everything I do.  My son has been at Long Marston School since May 2018 when we moved into the village after searching for a small school which offered a more personalised approach to learning.  I am new to school governance but I am passionate about Long Marston School and feel that parental involvement and representation are important in sustaining our village school and its unique offering.

Mr Chris Northway-Norman (ACA) - Co-opted Governor
I am very pleased to join the school as a Co-opted Governor. I am a qualified chartered accountant (ICAEW) and have a background in business and finance. I began my career at KPMG where I managed audit and assurance engagements for both large private businesses as well as several charities. I am currently Director of Finance at a business headquartered in Yorkshire with UK-wide operations. I intend to use my finance background to offer guidance to the senior management team.

Mr Justin Patterson - Staff Governor
I am the Key Stage Two teacher at Long Marston Primary and the nominated staff governor. I currently sit on the curriculum committee.

Dr Ellie Willard - Local Authority Governor
My career has centred mostly around education, including roles as a teaching assistant, teacher and head of department.  I am currently a senior lecturer in Psychology at Leeds Beckett University. My personal and professional interests are in special needs provision and child mental health, and I am delighted to contribute and be involved as a governor at Long Marston school. As a mum to three grown up daughters, I also understand the perspective of a parent and the importance that home-school links have for the child. I live in a village near Wetherby.

Governing body structure and responsibilities
The key responsibilies of school governing bodies are:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

In our school, these responsibilities are carried out by our full governing body and two committees. Our Finance, Resources, Health and Safety committee leads on finance, staffing and premises issues. Our Curriculum committee leads on our curriculum approach, and our support for children with special educational needs.  For further information about the responsibilities of our governors, please contact the Clerk to governors by emailing admin@longmarston.n-yorks.sch.uk
