Geography and History
In Maple we teach geography and history each alternative half term. We encourage chidren to take an inquiry approach, asking questions about each topic and developing curiosity about the past and the world around us. In recent terms we have received a letter from Sir Ernest Shackleton, asking if we would like to join his crew. We learnt the amazing story of Endurance and the resuce mission that followed.
In Geography we have recently learnt about Biomes around the Earth and how these relate to the Equator and the tropics. We learnt why there are differnt biomes aruond the world and the features of each of these. Our topic ended with each person choosing to make a biome out of a carbard box and these were absolutely fantastic.

Art and Design Technology
Art and design technology are also taught each alternative half term. Some topics we have covered are designing a boat and making an Egyptian bread.
During design technology children look at and evaluate exisitng products, before designing, making and evaluating a product of their own. When designing a boat we looked at types of boat that exist and the features of each type. We then designed a success criteria that each boat should meet. This included being waterproof, floating and being able to carry passengers. We then tested our boats and evaluated how they could be improved.

There are also many sporting competitions held throughout the year with other nearby schools.
P.S.H.E
P.S.H.E is taught using the One Decision teaching materials. Topics covered are always approached sensitively and age appropriately. There are lots of discussions around the topics each week and children have a video to watch, to decide which of the children in the scenario being discussed is making the right decision. Some topics we have learnt about this year are keeping safe, emotions, and being responsible.
